With the postponed 2020 Olympic Games kicking off later this week, all eyes are on Tokyo to execute a successful event. Though the usual torch of global anticipation and camaraderie has been passed on to this summer’s Games, the event will be anything but typical.
Following the event planning advice from the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games that were held amid the Spanish Flu and from other major 2020 sporting events held during the COVID-19 pandemic, here are a few ways the 2020 Games are expected to employ temporary modular structures to help keep more than 18,000 athletes, journalists and officials safe.
Modular on the World Stage
The versatility of temporary modular structures will be on display in Tokyo. More than 40 temporary structures have been designed specifically for the Games and will be removed following the closing ceremony. For example, in the Olympic Village, temporary medical facilities have been set up for PCR tests for athletes and an external quarantine hotel, should an athlete test positive.
Looking ahead, the proposals for the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2028 Games in Los Angeles both include a record number of temporary venues. That’s because with the use of modular structures, expedited tournament setup and cleanup timelines will be that much easier to accomplish. Here are a few other ways modular has been used at past Olympic Games and other large events.
When constructing temporary housing for Olympic athletes and their teams, modular buildings have been used to quickly create onsite Olympic Villages. Modular buildings have also been used to create temporary hotels for Olympic officials, spectators and staff to stay close by for the entirety of the event.
Event Media Centers
For members of the media covering large events, temporary media centers have helped workers stay informed with temporary offices located right outside major sports arenas, stadiums and events. During NASA’s final shuttle mission for Atlantis media and journalists covering the launch used mobile offices to remain organized and informed during the launch.
Event Operations & Storage
To help keep an event running smoothly, modular offices and storage containers have been used as event command stations, ticket booths, and additional storage space. The 2019 PGA Championship, for instance, used mobile offices as event operation rooms and tech support offices to help organize and execute another successful championship event.
